چکیده
Telescopes reveal that elements are formed through the recombination of subatomic particles within supernovae, producing the nebulae in which galaxies coalesce. Microscopes reveal that eukaryotic organisms form through the recombination of prokaryotic cells, producing plants and animals that recombine to propagate as communities. Microscopists and astronomers alike have thus begun to wonder whether genetic recombination is just one of many recombinational events involved in innovation and evolution. If so, then perhaps nucleic acids are minor components in a universal information system so vast and effective that the positioning of each element codes for the functionality of a nested series of additional elements. This would be analogous to a computer system in which information is so effectively stored that every bit of hardware is also a bit of software. This may be the universe that awaits our exploration at the dawn of the information age. In the words of Ramon Margalef (1963) `Let us imagine the structure of a community in terms of a message, written in a language with a number of symbols equal to the number of species, and where individual symbols stand for individuals'. He goes on to discuss the possibility that objects such as `dead wood' and `rabbit burrows' are `elements of organization' functioning as informational structures in that they are the product of a `series of decisions' that in ̄uence the future development and propagation of ecosystems. From Margalef's perspective, each object is functional in terms of its activity, but each object is also informational in terms of its positioning (in terms of the strategic signi®cance, with respect to propagation, inherent in the spatial and temporal positioning of its activity in relation to the activity of other objects). If all of this should prove true, then life would no longer be thought of as an infection within a dead universe. Nor could life be described solely in terms of individual and group sporting events. Life would be innate within the space±time relationships of all chemical, physical and biological objects. It would be neither a competition for resources nor a cooperation to obtain resources. Creative thought, in the form of seemingly coincidental trial and error, would de®ne the limits of the universe, the scope of achievements and the speed of evolution, the size of the universe being limited only by the number of levels created in an informational hierarchy that expands exponentially as each level of language or code is created. If this should prove true, then natural selection, k selection and r selection would become the great superstitions of the twentieth century, and will represent the greatest barrier to enlightened scienti®c thought in the third millennium.

Augur-Like Gesture Interaction for A Magic
Crystal balls are generally considered as a medium to perform divination or fortune-telling. These imaginations are mainly from some fantasy films and fictions, in which an augur can see into past, present, or future through a crystal ball. With the different impressions, crystal ball has revealed itself a perfect interface for the users to access and to manipulate visual media in an intuitive,...
متن کاملInfluence of Calcination Kinetics Parameters on Synthesis of KNN Piezoelectric Ceramics
The current research was focused on synthesizing potassium sodium niobate (KNN) piezoelectric ceramics for the system (K0.48Na0.52) NbO3 by high energy ball milling process for 15h at the speed of 300 rpm. The blended nano-crystalline powder was calcined in conventional box furnace at 700oC, 800oC and 900oC for duration of 5h, 7h and 10h. Diffraction result of calcine powder confirmed the f...

This paper surveys what is known about the creation of spreadsheets, and presents some ideas to increase the productivity and effectiveness of spreadsheet simulations. I discuss spreadsheet errors, and present a spreadsheet engineering framework that supports critical examination of how you create and use your spreadsheet models. I summarize useful design recommendations, and briefly discuss th...
متن کاملMicrostructural Evolution, Thermodynamics, and Kinetics of Mo-Tm2O3 Powder Mixtures during Ball Milling
The microstructural evolution, thermodynamics, and kinetics of Mo (21 wt %) Tm₂O₃ powder mixtures during ball milling were investigated using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Ball milling induced Tm₂O₃ to be decomposed and then dissolved into Mo crystal. After 96 h of ball milling, Tm₂O₃ was dissolved completely and the supersaturated nanocrystalline solid solution of Mo ...
متن کاملInitial Studies of the Charmoniltm System Using the Crystal Ball Data at Spear
First results from the Crystal Ball experiment (SP-24) are presented. In particular a preliminary analysis of 800K events at the J/$(3095) and 190K events at the $'(3684) gives new information on the existence of controversiai states of the charmonium system. We find no signal for the X(2820). Nous presentons les premiers resultats de l'exp&-ience Crystal Ball (SP-24) de SPEAR. En particulier u...
متن کاملi-ball: interactive information display like a crystal ball
Executive Overview: An object-oriented spatial display, which allows a user to observe 3D objects from any direction, is one of the emerging technologies in the field of visual interactive displays. The authors proposed and developed a new display of this type. Since the developed system is spherical and transparent, it looks like a crystal ball and is very attractive and expressive. Furthermor...
